I Love Scoring Late Goals

What a match, or should I say what a last 10 minutes of the match. In true madridismo fashion, something we do not see all that often from this squad, the team pulled off a stunning comeback late on to keep the gap between themselves and Barca respectable still. Not since the Super Cup win over Valencia have we seen such a fight for a win, even though the spirited performance at the Nou Camp was commendable even if it was negative. I could harp all day about madridismo and such, and how its a fundamental tenant of being a Real player, but as a fan its something that sucks you in and makes you so devoted. Such comebacks and attitudes towards fighting for the win are redeeming qualities that get fans so excited to see their team play. We have not seen it enough this season, but when we did, like today, it was the kind of euphoria you would expect from a Real Madrid match. To bad the team played very poorly and to be honest did not deserve the win, but let it take nothing away from the spirit shown to pull out the win.

I sat through 60 minutes of a stale Real game watching in amazement as two former Real youth team players basically ran the show for Getafe in the Bernabeu. And I have to say, I dozed off a bit during halftime and into the second half, more because of physical exhaustion and the boringness of class, but also because the game was really lack luster. It was how Getafe wanted to play, as it would get them a result, but they were brilliant in flashes, usually through the feet of Esteban Granero, and the noggin of Roberto Soldado. Soldado himself showed his finishing inability a few times sure, but his goal total this season does show he is a La Liga player, likewise Negredo, which shows the kind of talent that Real throws away on a continuous basis.

Granero was so brilliant when he touched the ball, that you almost wanted to run out on to the field and take Van der Vaart’s jersey off his back and give it to Esteban. ‘El Pirata’ was the winger, playmaker and goal provider for Getafe tonight, and he did it with a certain steel and determination in his play that Van der Vaart or Sneijder, the would be playmakers or ‘cracks’ lack completely. Bringing him back to Madrid seems like a priority now, even though, not to toot my own horn, I have been saying it all along. But while Granero was brilliant, and Soldado gave Cannavaro fits until his eventual substitution, its really not worth it to cry over spilled milk. They both were sold by the idiotic regime we had in charge, and hopefully a new president will atone for such mistakes by repurchasing at least Granero and Negredo. Mata is not a possibility in my eyes.

Getafe were pretty dull to watch though to, as Munoz sent out a work-men like to do hastle and harry Real more then anything. It was strange to see Albin on the bench in place of Soldado, but it showed that industry was preferred, at least from the start, to flair. Manu and Soldado worked hard along with Casquero and Polanski to disrupt any sort of rhythm that the makeshift central midfield of Gago and Guti, and it was a pretty poor showing by both. Gago once again showed he cannot operate as a lone defensive midfielder, while Guti showed that his form is non-existent after an injury layoff and not playing much since then.

I will say, Guti did do more defensive work and put a foot in when he could, but he clearly was not in the mood in the first half, probably because Gago’s scatter brain tracking play left him exposed, and he is hardly the player to be left exposed. Gago brings nothing exceptional to the table in terms of aggregate defensive or offensive play, so if he cant play as a defensive midfielder on his own, and he cant carry the play alongside Lass, his days are numbered with Real, especially with Mamadou Diarra returning next year. If he is not sold by Florentino Perez (that would be an awful piece of business).

Guti’s free kick was nice, and showed he still has the odd inspiration to offer. It was similar to the free kick he scored against Espanyol this season, except a little closer. Actions like that just go to show that he has madridismo running through his veins, its just that it does not come out for every game. Only on a full moon maybe?

Give credit to Polanski for controlling the midfield battle and not letting Guti have to much time to pick a pass. His passing stats suffered from Polanski’s constant harrassment and a lack of available targets, as Guti really tried to force to many passes. Then again, he has a sublime ball to Huntelaar that Stojkovic did well to parry away from Hunter’s feet cleanly. Van der Vaart as I mentioned was a disaster, and he shall be sold this summer with little complaint from Real fans. His skills have shined brightly in Holland and Germany, but I really have not seen all that much in Spain to say he is the crack we need. His meek physical attitude towards the game doesnt help, and so his fate is somewhat sealed. To bad too.

Huntelaar and Raul had little service, with Cata Diaz winning most of the headers and Raul dropping deep but never catching up to the play really. Raul’s continued participation, at least in my opinion, is a function of a lack of suitable replacements for Higuain playing on the right, or a better playmaker. But Raul’s work rate and leadership, two intangibles often underestimated, were pretty evident tonight as he was instructing his team mates not to drop their heads. Hunter has a little goal drought going, and its inevitable that it would happen in the worst part of his season with some big games coming up. He may find the bench next game if Robben is set to go.

Higuain looks like one of the players who truly understands the meaning of madridismo and exhibits it in all of his games. His commitment, work rate and skill level along with a better finishing rate will definitely make him a fan favorite for years to come. I applaud him for his goals tonight, and also for embodying the madridismo spirit. HALA HIGUAIN!

Robben got injured, and I do not know what the extent of the injury is, but his frail nature has yet again reared its ugly head. When he was on the field he was frustrating at best, often whining about being touched as he ran out to get a ball, but the ref never once listened to his protests. Drenthe actually brought some needed pace to the game in the same way Albin did, and I was pleased with him this evening. After watching the replay of the match, I found it interesting that he was given the freedom to roam either flank, much like he did under Schuster earlier this year when he had his brightest spell. His career may be away from Real still, but only on loan.

Canna had a rough night, and his declining speed has shown him to be found out by even Manu and Soldado. If he is to move back to Juventus, then he would be returning to a much slower league which would benefit him, but his leadership and tutoring will be missed. But then again, he would not accept a spot on the bench next season if his contract was renewed, so a split seems logical, and will be amicable I am sure. He was not at fault for the first goal, but he just could not cope with Soldado, which is interesting seeing as how this must have been apparent in training last year but Schuster never used Soldado.

Pepe was at fault for the first goal, mistiming his jump in comical fashion, and then twice let Albin sneak behind him, but was only punished with one goal. I suppose the goal was partially Javi Garcia’s fault as well, but I do not have any complaints about his performance. I think he did really well given he had not played at center back since the beginning of the season. It seems odd for him to play back there given the type of player he was in the youth divisions, but his size lends itself well to a center back, and his less then stellar ball control and clumsiness in the tackle are not as obvious at center back then defensive midfield.

Marcelo attacked well, but he left holes again, which was part of the reason that Cannavaro had trouble with Soldado. Granero’s skill took Marcelo for a fool all to often, but I think Heinze would have done worse given his bone head decision making. Marcelo really just needs to look around the field more and better anticipate the flow of the game rater then rely on his pace and skill to get him out of a jam. Sergio Ramos did pretty well against Gavilan, who is an under rated player in my book. Ramos did not have much to contribute attacking wise although a nice header was cleared off the line by Cortes in the second half. I think that either Ramos or Metzelder will be our center back for the upcoming games, so I dont think we should get use to seeing him at right back just yet. But a chance for Torres is always a good thing.

And of course Casillas saved the game for us with the penalty save. It seems almost common place for Casillas to pull of such great feats, but it was a good save and he had a few other interventions during the game that make him one of our most valuable players. But today, besides Higuain, he was our MVP as usual.

I did not forget about Pepe though. I condemn his actions, and I see it fitting to suspend him for the remainder of the season. And he needs to be fined by the club. Not only is such actions not tolerable as a Real Madrid player, but as a professional footballer in general. He is a hot head sure, but you dont kick players, punch players, or commit such stupid fouls anywhere on the pitch. It was a balatan dive by Casquero sure, but giving him a whack in the ass with your boot was not going to shift the decision in your favor. Going back and stomping on him, and then punching another Getafe player which enrages your co-captain enough to have him push you off the field is just disgraceful. He should sit out a while and think about what he did, but dont condemn him as a crook or a goon, it was a rush of blood to the head, not a Marco Materazzi-style pattern of behavior.

A great win, but we will look for much better from Real against Sevilla this weekend. Enjoy the last minute heroics for now, but we still have a lot of tough games in head of us. HALA MADRID!

EDIT: Robben has strained his left triceps surae, which means he strained his calf. Your calf muscle is split in two, and he strained one of the two muscle lengths, meaning ice and rest for a week or so. My room mate is a Physical Therapy grad student so he told me that. No Robben this weekend though.

Good point Sombra. Drenthe’s runs are often fruitless, but they create danger in the oppositions ranks with his pace and unpredictable movements. He often draws alot of fouls which is useful, but his skill level does not permit him to beat a man one on one on the wing, and his crossing is poor. He has the physical tools to be a good player, a left back by my estimation, but he needs to learn more on the technical and mental side of the game. A loan next season would help him, but Real’s track record with loans are terrible.

yep, agree wholeheartedly with Sombra’s comment. Getting really sick of Sneijder’s anonymity. He’s not incisive with his passes, and if he tries he generally overhits his passes. His shots from distance and set pieces are his only strengths, and they’ve been pretty shocking this year, hell even Guti’s been more effective in the past few games at them. He has got to be shown the door, along with van der Vaart. Drenthe might not have the technically ability to be influential, but his pace could cause issues especially around the penalty area. Wouldn’t mind him starting in the Classico, Puyol can be somewhat clumsy around the penalty area in tackle if he’s up against pace, as is Marquez. Also, I read somewhere that Sneijder’s out for the season…could someone verify that?

A lot of talk here about the clásico, but what about Sevilla?? 3 points are 3 points, and looking at barça yesterday (although Sevilla gave them all the space they wanted) they look awesome even without Messi. Things are looking very grim, Pepe deserves all the punishment he gets, I´m also expecting a financial sanction from the club to show supporters where they stand on this type of behaviour, but we will miss his speed strength and agility now we´ve reached the ´Everest´stage. Also Robben out for 2 to 3 games, Sneijder out for the season (I know a lot of you have been unimpressed this season, me likewise, but when he played along side Gago he got the midfield moving a lot faster)Raúl seems to have reverted to headless chicken mode, and if Higuaín doesn´t get his yellow revoked, he won´t be at the Sanchez Pijuán either.
Great last 10 mins as you say, but what a price to pay for the rest of the season.
I know you´re all grateful for my cheery posts, but what ideas do you have for the upcoming games?

Rabbit’s feet, voodoo, however in the hell you lads did it, us cules are gobsmacked. We thought that Getafe was going to help us out for sure.

Sorry about all the injuries for you this season. I want to see both sides at full strength. T’would be a compelling match.

Good luck against Sevilla. We ripped their hearts out in advance for you.

i did not see Granero trampled. But Javi Garcia is not to friendly with Granero, they had something of a rivalry in the Castilla team if I remember correctly. Javi Garcia was chatting it up with Soldado while marking him in the box though, which was pretty nice to see. Also remember that Granero was basically helping the Real players during the post match scuffle, which to me shows that his heart still lies with the Merengues.

As for Sneijder, he is indeed out for the season and could be out this summer. It all depends on the next president’s ability to deliver a crack. Im all for letting him loose, because he really just is not the type of player we need. A Diego, Granero or Joao Moutinho would be perfect. Or Kaka, but that wont happen. Drenthe’s influence is best used off the bench so I dont think we will see him start in the Classico, but possibly against Sevilla as we have so many players injured and suspended.

Kxevin- we have gotten lucky a few times sure, but I attribute the win against Getafe to madridismo more then anything. The players really responded to Albin’s goal the best way they could, much like the come back in the Super Cup this year, or a 4-3 win against Olympiakos last year in the Champions League.

Sevilla were ripped apart by you guys true, but what was Jimenez thinking playing Maresca against your impressive central midfield. He got ripped apart, and thats where all of the space came from. I cant see Jimenez lasting next year even though he will get Sevilla into the Champions League, because he can not win games against the better teams.

Don’t think that Jimenez was thinking, Corey. He clearly hasn’t watched any recent match tapes, I reckon. But the other factor I don’t think he was counting on was the quiet excellence of Keita. 54 of 54 passes? Plus, when Iniesta is playing as he was, it’s going to be a long day for anyone. He’s our barometer, in the way that, often, Robben is for you. When he’s rolling, it makes the side almost unplayable because of the space he creates..

Agreed about Jimenez’ future. You all will beat Sevilla as well, and something tells me that the Clasico will have it all to play for. I still wish that everyone was healthy for you. I’d love to see it.

Great match, great goals, i almost had a heart attack with the missed penalty, Guti’s goal, Pepe’s red card, and Higuain’s goal!!!

Too bad it took its toll on the team: Robben’s out for the next 2 matches (great move Juande), Pepe’s out for what seems the remainder of the season, Huntelaar might not be able to play against Sevilla, Higuain is suspended for that match too, i mean, can it get any worse for our team??? I SAY YES!!!, Sevilla went into the Camp Nou already thinking ahead of our game against them, that’s why they reserved key players such as Kanoute and I don’t remember who else…

The team played horribly, and as I said on the match comments, we can’t rely on the comebacks as a resource, too much intangibles have to go our way in order for them to be effective, so the team MUST bring in quality players, someone who strikes fear and respect in opposing teams, and get rid of the plethora of mediocre players we have going for us at the moment….

    That’s all, HALA MADRID!!!

I don’t agree on Sneijder leaving the club; he’s a good player, fans at the stadium love him, his work ethic and effort are impecable, he just has to get his groove back…

as for VDV, I’ve been saying all season that his lack of success is a direct result of him being played in the wrong position; I’m sure he would thrive playing behind the striker, as he’s always done, but Raul’s presence, and Juande’s lack of balls has condemned him to leave in the summer…

There are more of us, Kaushik. Ramzi is one, as is Hector. We visit here from time to time, just as Corey and John come over to our side.

I think that as with last season, when for many fans the joy of your championship was diminished by the array of complexities that was our train wreck last season, if we win this season, the joy will be diminished a bit by the fact that you didn’t have (as Ray-Ray calls him) Old Horsey Face, and a host of other injuries. The best wants to beat the best straight up.

Maybe next season, when you’ll have CR7 and we’ll have Ribery, everybody will be healthy and both sides will be even better.

Agree with other poster, Juande needs to have the balls to bench Raúl, they played with 10 most of Tuesday´s match. Both VDV and Sneijder favour that position,(as did Robinho) so back to the same old, same old, why have such and unbalanced team.

Does anyone have the complete list of players who will not be available against Sevilla? Are Diarra and Huntelaar eligible/fit? If so, I think we should be okay. We could play something like

Casillas; Ramos, Cannavaro, Metzelder, Torres; Palanca, Lass, Guti, Marcelo; Raul, Huntelaar.

Van der Vaart could be used up front or in the midfield, and Gago could be brought in if needed (he’s on 9 yellows, though, and we shouldn’t risk losing him for the Barcelona match unless necessary. Everyone seems to be kind of hard on him after the Getafe match, but I actually thought he played well – offensively, at least. His through balls were actually well played, and I thought he did a good job connecting the attack.)

My point is we can still field a very competitive team, and have VdV, Gago, Garcia, Parejo(!) and Drenthe on the bench. Yes, it’d be nice if we had Robben and Higuain, but I think we’re still in pretty good shape.

As I understand, Huntelaar has a hip abductor problem and is in serious question for the match (albeit not ruled out for sure) and Higuain will miss it due to suspension pending an appeal of his yellow card. Pepe is obviously not gonna play. Lass should be back. However, with Guti’s great form lately, it would not surprise me to see him next to Lass while Gago sits to avoid risking the 10th yellow.

I’m just going to keep my fingers crossed about Huntelaar, then. But I just realized a slight problem with my lineup and it’s that without the likes of Robben and Higuain, Guti’s insightful passing might be wasted: he wouldn’t have anyone making runs into the box.

And can I reiterate how little I want to see a Lass – Diarra double pivot next season? I don’t want to see Madrid playing that kind of negative football. In fact, I’m going to officially declare myself the first member of the ‘Save Gago’ fan club. Anyone else want to join?

actually, i’m quite looking forward to see the diarra duo in action. gago just hasn’t developed into the (defensive)central midfielder/playmaker we hoped for. i’d like to see lass with a license to roam, as he has shown to be one of our few players with pace and a good dribble. alternatively, if granero/parejo/de la red prove to be worthy of a spot in midfield, i could do with lass as a RB and ramos as CB.

So you’re not going to join the Save Gago club, Sombra?

The only way I’d be cool with a double Diarra midfield is if Lass played more of a possession/distribution role, a la Xavi Hernandez. Bu I’ve never been wowed by either of the Diarra’s distribution skills. Lass is fantastic at holding, yes, Mamadou is great at destroying, but I think Gago’s a much better distributor than either of them.

De la red and lass in the midfield could be great remember when he and the other diarra and VDV were playing together at the beginning of the season we were winning all our games and in style too

Next year’s midfield should be like this IMO

Robben dela red lass granero ?

Or if the rumors that bayern are ready to do a deal with us by taking VDV plus cash for ribery are true then it should be
Robben/granero de la red lass ribery

I’m kind of seeing similarities between gago and cambiasso; he will end up being great for a big club, but it just won’t be enough for madrid. if you can sell him at a good price and have the excellent diarra’s, and the youth team’s de la red, parejo and granero as contestants for the two central spots, why keep him?
in a way, i guess i like the idea of “zidane’s and pavon’s”, barring the bit where we’re only buying 50-70 million euro superstars. what i mean is: Madrid should not have mediocre players, unless they’re fresh out of the cantera or are “veterans” such as raul and guti.

    Agreed Sombra.

Gago could do really well, but I look at alot of the prospects that have come out of Boca recently and notice they all are not living up to their hype. Neri Cardozo, Nayar at Huelva, that Banega kid at Atleti/Valencia etc. all have been less then impressive since leaving Boca. Gago could do better at a different team sure, but do we really know that? The fact is he does not do very well with us right now, so the situation must be analyzed.

Huntelaar should be fit, but if not then I could Saviola still on the bench and Raul as a lone striker with VdV behind him. I dont forsee any youth team players being called up, but Parejo should make the bench for sure. There might even be another appearance at center back for Javi Garcia.
